From the first Spanish settlements through the Civil War and two world wars, the armed forces have been a vital part of our economy and culture and, more importantly, the defense of the United States.

MAY IS "MILITARY APPRECIATION MONTH"

During our local Military Appreciation Month the greater Pensacola area will recognize the achievements and sacrifices made by the men and woman of the Armed Forces of our local community and of the entire country. It is the one special month of the year when all of us say "Thank You" to the service members in our area.

As in past years, the 2008 Military Appreciation Month festivities will include a school essay contest. The Pensacola Bay Area Chamber of Commerce has joined in with the Navy League to sponsor the contest and gets support from the local military and civilian communities. Students from Escambia County who are home schools, attend either public, or private schools are invited to express themselves on topics associated with the military and patriotism. The top three entries in each category will be recognized and receive U.S. Bonds at an awards luncheon. The luncheon will be held at the Mustin Beach Officer's Club onboard NAS Pensacola, on Wednesday 14 May 2008 at 1130. The attached sheets include the entry form and information on the contest.

I ask that you reproduce the attached information sheet and entry forms and provide copies to your students. Entries are due to the Pensacola Bay Area Chamber of Commerce by 5:00 pm on Wednesday, April 16, 2008. If you have any questions, please contact me at 477-3872 or via e-mail at cubbyusmc@cox.net.

The members of the Chamber's Military Affairs Committee appreciate your support in this community effort and look forward to the student's bookmarks/essays.

Sincerely,

David L. Barraclough
